Oscar Nomination initial reaction

Ok - no real big surprises - except Michael Clayton - a distinctly ordinary movie leading the nominations - Tom Wilkinson deserves the nomination, Clooney possibly, but the film no way should be rubbing shoulders with the others in the best picture category. Should win zero!

Disappointing, but not surprised to see to no mention of Streep or Cruise for Lions for Lambs or James MacAvoy for Atonement. Both Tommy Lee Jones and Philip Seymour Hoffman could have had second nominations (for No Country For Old Men and The Savages) respectively, but only having one might play in their favour. No such problems for Cate Blanchett with two nominations - her supporting turn in I'm not there is by far stronger. Nice to see Juno getting nods, even though I've not seen it yet, but always nice to see the indie comedies getting a bit of praise.

Oh, and Norbit got a nomination (for makeup) - thats just too laughable to comment on.

You should give Michael Clayton another go. It wasn't a "sub-Grisham" (is that possible?) thriller, as you said in your review. It was a grown-up character piece; great cinematography too. Mr Wilkinson leaves it half way through because having rotated his moral compass 180 degrees, his work of framing Clooney's moral choices is done. Clooney's character is left at the moral centre, struggling with his identity, but not in Wilkinson's childish good vs evil way. It really is a very good film.

Well, part of the joy of the whole thing is that everybody's entitled to an opinion - even those who think that Mary Poppins is the Exorcist with songs. I'm afriad my opinion about Michael Clayton hasn't changed though - some great performances let down by leaden direction that drains all the energy out of it. It's just nowhere near the quality of the other best picture noms that I've seen and i suspect won't be as good as the ones I haven't.

Agreed; no-one's suggesting you aren't entitled to an opinion. I'm just expressing a friendly contrary view. I hope that's okay. You do have a comment box, after all. Consider your opinion fully-entitled.

I still hold that if you get the chance to see this film again, you'll understand better why it's up for so many oscars if you can see it as a character-driven study, focused on the Clooney character's shifting self-view, not as a rollercoaster blockbuster movie.

p.s. I don't think it'll win much in Feb. It'd be hard to top DDL doing his big mustache panto baddie turn in There Will Be Blood! :)

Totally - contrary views are always welcome. As long as you remember that at the end of the day I'm right! Only joking.

Have you seen There Will Be Blood yet? I've only seen the trailer, but I have a sneaking feeling that whilst they might go for Daniel Day lewis in the acting, No Country might come through in the best film category.
